two decades ago there was music

Dear QotD?ers,

Ahhh, no work tomorrow. I can run errands and go on a bike ride! oh yeah, and sleeping a little bit later. What anecdote can I share with you about today that doesn't involve work or food? It's over 70° in the house tonight and we are probably going to sleep with the ceiling fan on. crazy.

As you should surmise, the last baby I held was Baby Stella with her delicate and loong, adorable baby fingers.

Today's Question of the Day? is:
What's your favorite 80's song? (or songs, if you can't pick one)

Love,
The Asker

I would have to say Footloose. The girls and I used to turn it up to "blast zone" and clean house to it over and over.
Also Wynonia Judd's "No One Else On Earth". Stacia and Bev and their cousin Halea would play that really loud and sing and I would pretend to play the drums! Man, those were the "music" days!

I spent the 80s being young and beautiful. I listened to a lot of music then.

I know one of my favorite bands was a local group named the Uranium Savages. They had a song titled "Idi Amin Is My Yard Man." I also remember the sign at the bowling lanes in Austin that said "Wednesday Nights Bare Naked Ladies." Needless to say, we did not automatically assume this was a band and so I knew a number of guys that went bowling on Wednesday nights. I also saw Lyle Lovett both in Austin and College Station play in very small venues.
How do I pick from things like that??

I listened to hours of the Clash, the B52s, the Police, and watched the premier of "Thriller" on MTV.

Yeah, I can't give you even a top ten answer without having to spend three hours on memory lane.

Ohh!! One cup of coffee and an article on the court rulings for the Nigerian President later and I KNOW WHAT THE CORRECT ANSWER IS!!

I was remembering that I used to listen to honest to goodness ALBUMS on a record player. And then I remembered we went to visit and Dannie and Sean's over Thanksgiving and that Sean still has his album collection and a record player. And he put on Gary Numan's Pleasure Principle album while we were there.

CARS!!

Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors

Or as Sweetie Pie refers to the song...Vince's favortie song!!

Gary Numan's song "CARS". It's been my favorite song from the 80's since I saw that Mighty Boosh episode,

Wow, I feel all weird now.

I actually have no idea when music produced beyond the past month came out. I can't even truly put them into decades.

So. Um. *shifty eyes*

Gah. Who came up with the word "favorite" and why did they make it mean only one of something? Whoever they were, they were obviously a great big meanipants and I don't like them.

* Bop, by Dan Seals
* Anything ever made by Garth Brooks
* Fishin' in the Dark by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

*stops looking up older songs on google to find out if they land in the target decade*

Chantilly Lace by the Big Bopper, incidentally, is a LOT older than I thought it was. And so is Man of Constant Sorrow.

Weirdly enough, I like a lot of 1950's music.

ALSO

@Anne, Mother of Three
I still have and use my record player. We play records when we're cleaning house, doing dishes, or sitting quietly at our computers with the tv off. =]

whoa.
just WAY too many to name.
If it was a hit in the 80s, I probably love it.

I guarantee Daryl's favorite is I just died in your arms tonight, by Cutting Crew.

Dear The Asker,
I despise your question. 80's!?!
Seeing as none of us (except for me of course) were alive during 80 I must assume you mean 1080. Oh wait you were'nt alive then either. So I shall just name all of my favorite "80's" songs.
-80: Happy Birthday (I sang this to Emporer Titus one year before his death)
-1080: Any of the siren songs (These were hip in greece back then)
-(1280-1580) People got boring so I left to destroy krypton and don't know much about music during this period.
-1680: Any of Bach (We were bff's)
-1780: Brahm's Hungarian Dance #5
-1880: I've been working on the railroad or camptown lady.
-1980: Girls just wanna have fun (dont ask why)
-2080: Me. (Yes, It is I who becomes the greatest musical prodigy in the world!!!)bwahaha

sincerly,
Dr. Fan-music-o, King of time, music, and booging down.

Aunt barbara, I love cleaning songs@

Anne, that's why you could pick lots! Do you know who Idi Amin is?
Darn Comcast! WE've been behind on our Mighty Boosh!

Mr. SHSS, excellent inspiration

TamiJean, Chantilly Lace is a good song!

Sabrina, you know Daryl so well!

Sweetie Pie, I don't think I know either of those songs! Do you know who sings them?

Dr. Fandnago, are you a friend with Dr. Who?

Jackie said...

Dr. Fandango, you're too funny.

I would have to say "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" if that counts. I was born in '88, so I didn't actually get to experience 80's music to fullest.

Pssst..

I believe Sweetie Pie meant MY Sweet Lord by George Harrison as her first pick. She is trying really hard to "stay in character " for her answers and had to make selections based on her character.

Not so sure on the other song.

I'll ask.

Oh, and OF COURSE I know who Idi Amin is! That is what makes the song funny!! I repeat...I am plenty well-rounded, and that is not a reference to my hips.

Picking lots was toooo much thinking.

Kristen said...

Jackie, that's a great song for exagerated singing and dancing!

Anne, My Sweet Lord is a fabulous choice. I have that on record! Well, unless I gave that album back to my parents after I stole it from their stash in HS.
I have no idea who Idi Amin is. I must look it up. OK, he is aweful. What in the world would that song be about?! Him mowing lawns?

Jackie said...

The Asker,

I told Matthew I wanted that to be our first dance. He wasn't too fond of that idea.

Kristen said...

Jackie, if that's the case, we can dance to it later
