Book :: Movie

Dear QotD?ers,
.
There are cookies in my home. Somewhere, there is also a bag of Rieces Pieces. My husband thinks I don't know where he hid them.
.
Today's Question of the Day? is:
.
Have you ever seen a movie that was better than the book?
.
I have. We saw Inkheart this weekend. I read the book and wasn't really impressed with the pacing or amount of magicalness. So, go see the movie first, then if you feel like it, read the book.
Actually, I'd also say that the Lord of the Rings movies were better than the books. Yes, the books were wonderful, but there was often dry, lengthy, descriptive passages that translated much better as visual descriptions.
.
Love,
The Asker

I can only think of a few movies that come close to being as good as the book, but no movies that were better than the book.

Movies that were almost as good:
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Sorcerer's Stone
The Golden Compass (actually saw the movie first and then went back to read the trilogy)

Oh, no wait...the author is James Patterson, I believe. He wrote a series of novels with titles from nursery rhymes...like "Kissed the Girls." The books were tripe, but I read a few anyway. I saw a movie of one recently with Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. It was much better than the book, but that is not saying much.

Also the Bourne series was pretty awesome. I read those books when I was like fifteen, so there is a wide gap between the reading and the watching, which may skew my perception of things.

I find that I enjoy books far better than movies. I have more time to fall into the plot and get to know the characters. However, I'm not really a big complainer when it comes to my favorite books being turned into movies. That being said, I still love the books more.

There are a few books that I can think of that I prefer the movie version. Perhaps because I saw Gone with the Wind before reading the book, I ended up liking that certain things (such as Scarlet being unhappy with her first children) that I was glad the movie version eliminated.

Also, I was not a fan of The Red Badge of Courage, because of two pages of a looking at a bush followed by three of thinking about said bush. The movie version with Audie Murphy, however, is wonderful.

The Bourne movies were really good as stand-alone movies, but bear absolutely no relation to the books past the names. So I don't know if that counts (the books were good, but long-winded).

I agree with Lord of the Rings. I have read the books countless times and loved them more each time. I was dreading the movies because I was afraid they would ruin the story. Instead, I was literally blown away by every scene and character. Perfect!

Also, I hated the book The Never-Ending Story. I grew up watching that movie several times a day for many years. I read the book after college. It might just be my diminishing ability to get lost in a fantasy world, or it might be that I had seen the movie too much, but the book was very different and silly. The movie is a part of who I am today.
