Spookaween: 6/5

Dear QotD?ers,

Hooray! We had about 50 trick-or-treaters before we ran out of candy (I bought some clearance candy today so we could have some 'leftovers'). Most of the kids had good costumes. Anthony (a boxer) came twice (with different chaperones). Some kids didn't dress up and looked lame. At least one kid had a quick response of 'male model.' One girl was either 'older sister' or 'spiderman backpack' both of which were dumb. I'd really like to give those lame-os a few pieces of gum, and everyone else good candy. But I'm nervous of the repercussions. No egging this year!

Today's Question of the Day? is:
What's the best home-made costume you've seen this year? or EVER?

Love,
The Asker

I judged the Art Club Halloween Costume last year. The winner was a girl, who had covered a 3'X3' carboard box with a white table cloth. She cut a circle out for her head to go through the box/tablecloth. She had dishes, silverware, a glass, rubber mice, spiders, etc on the table also. Her brown hair was dusted with powder, halloween makeup, and her head was the main course. It was so clever, that it was not creepy! It was all her idea and really well done!

Saw many cute ones this year....little lady bugs, butterflies, angels, cats,. Don't know that I thought any were really clever.
We did go to Plano this year(to be with our grand daughters) and be part of their Halloween night and
just about all of the adults(chaperones) were also dressed up. Some scary...most just a costume.
Angels, witches, a nun(that was a good one)50's girl, cat burgler, hippie, beach bum, army guy etc.

My dad dressed up as grapes once. He and my mom blew up dark purple balloons and tied them all over him until he truly looked like someone out of a fruit of the loom commercial.

Jeannie, I saw someone once with a similar costume to the one you described. The only difference was the head had a lampshade on top and there was a big numeral one painted on. He was a ONE-NIGHT STAND. hehe.

I don't often see the homemade costumes from trick or treaters at large.

Of the costumes we have put together over the years, the one I remember best was when Nick went as a gorilla. He loved the movie "Mighty Joe Young" and had to be a gorilla that year. He was probably three.

I took an old batman mask and covered it with fake fur and did the same for a black sweat suit. It was a big mess. The mask stayed in the house for a long time as part of the dress-up stash.

But the best one has to have been about 20 years ago when Bob stopped off after work one day to meet some friends. The place was having a costume contest that night that Bob was not made aware of, so Bob went out to his car and with the clothes he had worn to work, tweeked and primped and turned himself into a character that he called.....please excuse my husband, especially 20 years ago....Peed My Pants Man. There were people there who had bought elaborate costumes (pirates, kings, witches, superheros) but Bob WON the contest and $500.00!!!!

I don't recall many homemade costumes that came by our house, if any, and if there were they weren't clever enough to remember.

Somewhere my fam has a picture of the three kids at a party; me as a GI-Joe, Lauren as a Boy Scout, and Daryl as Waldo, of "Where's Waldo" fame -- all completely assembled/fabricated at home.

Justin, one of your best ones was when you were dressed up like Hans Solo...complete with a toy gun strapped to your thigh. Impressive!

Mom-in-law, Oh, that was a good idea. I bet it looked good

Mom,
I would have liked to see a butterfly this year.

Sabrina,
I like your dad's grape idea.

Anne, I'm pretty sure I don't want to know the detail's of Bob's costume.
