DON'T PANIC

Dear QotD?ers,
.
Hurricane Ike has now made it into the gulf and will be hitting some part of Texas. The coastal towns are under voluntary evacuation which may become mandatory later this morning. This would effect Brenda's parents and Amanda. There has not yet been a decision to shutdown the plant or to send home 'non-essential' persons. We are alert and wary and watching. If we do get an early release for the day (or I have any other exciting news about our situation), I'll post them on my livejournal. http://ksspiff.livejournal.com We have supplies to last us a few days if we ride it out and lose power. We also have an evacuation vacation home thanks to Matthew.
.
Today's Question of the Day? is:
.
Does your driving behavior change depending on the vehicle and the passengers?
.
Love,
The Asker
.

No. I am not a fan of automobiles and wish I had another way to move myself and my family. I hate driving and am very aware of the fact that I am not a good driver. Therefore, type of vehicle and passengers therein do not affect my slow, plodding, reluctant driving. Good thing I am a mother of three and spend no less than an hour a day driving kids around to schools and various functions. Another good thing is that the other people I share the road with are also mothers, bad drivers, only partially focused on the road and determined to make sure that THEIR kid gets there first! Loads of fun everyday!

Back when I was 17, I had three important goals to fulfill in my lifetime:

Get a chauffer
Have fresh flowers in my home everyday
Work in a lab and do IMPORTANT science

Yes. I drive trucks and SUVs more defensively than when I drive cars.
When I have no passengers, I drive more aggresively or zippy since I know how I'm directing the car and shift my body smoothly against the forces. I also listen to the radio on 'scan' mode a lot. Also, I do a lot of car dancing when I'm by myself, but I will only car dance with passengers that are my husband or younger brother.

I do drive more cautiously with passengers. I try to make smoother turns and changes in acceleration so I don't alarm them. I also take less risks like passing on a 2 lane highway or swifly pulling out from a parkinglot to a road.

Yes. When I am driving a carload of friends around I tend to wobble (for lack of a better word). I rotate the steering wheel 1/4 turn left and right in an effort to nauseate everyone in the car. I also have a lot of 'brake checks', with ample warning of course. Finally, When stopped at a red light I like to pump the brake a lot. I let go just enough that I start moving and then hit the brake again. wow... writing all of this down makes me think of how much of as @$$ I am for doing it.

Also - I tend to drive a bit more aggressively in my truck than in Jackie's little car.

The vanpool van is huge and heavy and full of working adults, so that requires extra safe driving, like long braking distances, slow turns, etc. But I try to be consistent in all other vehicles. I don't take risks in vehicles if can help it.

I'm glad I don't have to compete with soccer moms (or is it 'hockey moms' now?) on a regular basis. That would likely frustrate me to no end.

My initial thought was no I don't drive any different. However, after reading Kristen's post, I think I do. If I am by myself, I tend to be more aggressive in passing people. However, if I am with my mother, I tend to stay on the slower side and just wait for the person to turn off. Also, if I'm with my friends who LIVE in Houston and they make me drive in traffic, I get nervous because I don't mind switching lanes and zipping in and out, but I get worried they might think I'm crazy, so I hesitate more.

For the record, I just watched the noon news and I am still not under a mandatory evacuation. YAY! However, I already had plans to leave for the weekend, so I think I'm gonna stick with them and not be here!

i for sure drive differently with passengers than without. i don't think i drive "unsafely" without passengers, i just try to make the ride smoother for them when they are in the car. and yes, i also drive differently in larger vehicles than i do in my little car. i have to pick different parking spaces and give myself a lot more room for turns and slowing down. but i love my little civic, so i don't like to drive other cars very often.

Yes, definetly.

In a vehicle that has a manual transmission, my driving behavior changes from one that is productive and gets me from one place to another, to one that does not move me anywhere that requires going past 3rd gear.

When I'm in a van, my driving gets incredibly slow, I'm scared to turn, and scared to change lanes.

With other people, I usually go 5 above the speed limit so as not to be made fun of (peer pressure).

By myself, the cruise control gets set exactly at the speed limit and I hang out in the right lane!

With my camaro I was a little more... aggressive. With the Rav, I'm not as eager to pass or dart in and out between other cars. Also, I realized tonight that I do droive a little safer when my pregnant friend is in the car with me.

My first answer is NO. I think I am equally careful no matter if I am by myself or with others.

Now........put me in a red convertible???? I am not sure....
