the great outdooors

Dear QotD?ers,
.
Monday is over. Hooray! Justin made a salmon dish for dinner and I liked it! Not that Justin's cooking is questionable, but I usually don't enjoy salmon.
No real big plans this week. Work. Oh yeah, this weekend we are going CAMPING!
.
Today's Question of the Day? is: from Justin
.
What was really fun to do the last time you went camping?
.
Love,
The Asker

Camping has become a segregated thing since before Jessica was born. While I was pregnant and she was still little, the boys would take off to go camping and leave us behind. The last camping excursion was about a year and a half ago and Jessica was by then old enough to feel left out.

So I took her for her first trip to a mall! She loved it...all the shoes and purses!!

Bob says men go camping just so they can eat white bread.

Toasting marshmallows is fun!

In truth, though, the most fun I had last time we went camping was when Steven hooted at the owls (his father and uncles used to hoot at the owls down by Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas when he was a kid, and he learned how).

After just a few minutes, we had at least five owls perched in the trees around us, hooting back. It was incredible.

But unless you or Justin knows how to hoot, it may be less useful to you than the marshmallow comment. *grins*

Camping where? I haven't been since this time last year. Brazas Bend State Park (off Hwy 59 south) is big and nice and has lots of alligators! They are out all winter.

We simply must go camping together sometime!

My favorite thing is building the fire and keeping it burning all day and night. And hiking.

I adore camping. I love the fresh air, the lovely views, the fire-cooked food, the cozy campfire conversations, the stars, and most of all, the bigness of nature.

I am very grateful for my awesome Eagle Scout camping companion! I love the outdoors, but I don't know a thing about making a fire or survival in the woods.

We are going camping, too, in a couple weeks. :D

Groovy Sabrina's 'bigness of nature' reference sparked a memory. It is not really camping out, but close.

We refer to it as the tenth day of fall picNick. Three years ago, Nick left secret envelopes all through the house that warned everyone to be ready for the tenth day of fall family picnic. He chose the spot and told his dad where he wanted to go. That morning, Nick was up early and had packed all the sports stuff he thought should go and was working on making sammiches.

We went on a hike. We played frisbee golf. We played a soccer game. We had lunch. Then Jessica and I read and took a nap while the boys went and did secret guy stuff that they can't tell me about, but no animals got hurt.

Nick plans great outings!! The frisbee golf was really fun, but be careful not to get lost in the woods!

Oh, bigness of nature...Nick said he wanted the family to play under the big sky!!

TamiJean's story made me think of the book "Owl Moon." I would love to hear the hoot. That must be fun!

One thing that I really enjoy with camping is going on a hike and finding something unique/unexpected....like a beautiful flower growing out of a rock.....or seeing a little rabbit.... or just finding a pretty stone...or coming upon a breathtaking view......

Sounds simple/crazy........but I like that......

I too love the outdoors. I like to stay up late by the campfire under the stary night! I think eating a breakfast cooked outdoors on a cold morning is the best! The coffee even smells better.

SMORES! Ghost stories and cuddling by the fire. Take blow up rafts if you need some extra padding.

We went to Pedernales Falls, west of Austin and even though it was cold, we got out and hiked all around the rocks at the falls and just really enjoyed the scenery. I personally like sitting around the campfire, but with all the burnbans now, campfires are not possible.
